A Tufts University student is being held at an ICE detention facility in Louisiana, and there are growing questions about how she was taken into custody.

Rümeysa Öztürk, a Tufts University graduate student, was arrested in Massachusetts and sent to the South Louisiana ICE processing center in the swamplands of Evangeline parish in Basile. Sending detainees to the cluster of remote immigration detention centers known as “Detention Alley” in the south is a common practice.

The school's declaration in federal court on behalf of Rümeysa Öztürk is some of the strongest pushback by a university against the Trump administration's arrests of foreign students.
