P resident Donald Trump is reportedly finalizing an Executive Order that would attempt to dismantle the Department of Education, which would fulfill a campaign promise as he seeks to shrink the size of the federal government.

As President Donald Trump seeks to shutter the Dept. of Ed, the potential closure of the federal agency has some Michiganders reeling.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said Donald Trump is not asking the Federal Reserve to lower its short-term interest rates, but what he and the president do want is to bring down longer-term borrowing costs via 10-year Treasury yields.

Trump is preparing an executive order aimed at shrinking the department as he looks to fulfill his campaign promise to shut it down.

"Trump, Elon Musk, and his henchmen want to lock the promise of public education behind an ivory tower of rich people and throw away the key," U.S. Sen. Ed Markey, D-Mass., said.

According to the one-sentence bill filed by the Kentucky Republican, the department would be abolished at the end of 2026. Massie originally proposed the same bill during President Donald Trump's first term in 2017 and Republicans have long opposed the government agency,
