The humble egg is now a source of frustration for millions of shoppers around the U.S, who face soaring prices and shortages. What's going on?

The price of eggs has been going up and experts expect it to keep rising. The average cost of a dozen white eggs in California is up .72 cents this week at to around $8.76 a dozen. Arizona is seeing a similar spike.

Egg prices have more than doubled over the last two years as a dangerous strain of bird flu has swept across the country.

Texas A&M AgriLife said wholesale prices for large Grade A eggs hit an all-time high of $6.14 per dozen on average nationally on Jan. 18, according to the latest USDA report.

The USDA attributed the rise in egg costs to an outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza, or bird flu, which has caused a strain in supply. The rise in prices is not sudden, as eggs cost 36.

Recent bird flu outbreaks have shrunk the supply of eggs, raising prices. President Donald Trump made a campaign pledge to lower food prices.

More than 145 million chickens, turkeys and other birds have been slaughtered since the current bird flu outbreak began in 2022.

White House reporter for the Washington Examiner, Christian Datoc, asked the final question at this term's first WH press briefing about the increasing cost of eggs. Press secretary Karoline Leavitt answered: "We also have seen the cost of everything -- not just eggs,
