The idea is the brainchild of Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier, who dubbed it "Alligator Alcatraz" because of its location within the Everglades National Park and the thousands of alligators and pythons that surround the site's perimeter.

In the interest of carrying out more of President Donald Trump’s promised mass deportations, officials in Florida this week started construction on a migrant detention facility they’re billing as “efficient” and “low-cost” – because mother nature will provide much of the security.

Immigrant advocates said the move creates a whole new form of detention outside the scope of the federal government.
