The 14-year-old has been identified as Jason Peña, according to nonprofit organizer Julie Contreras who is working closely with his family.

The family said Mexican President Claudia Scheinbaum promised a security plan when she took office last year, but failed to protect Jesus Macias.

Jesus Macias was spending the holidays with his mother in Zacatecas state when he was shot to death Dec. 30. The family and a nonprofit working with them call on the U.S. State Department to investigate.

According to WLS, Jesus Macias, 62, and his family were traveling along a highway in Zacatecas, Mexico, on December 30th, 2024, when he failed to stop at a checkpoint set up by a drug cartel.

Jesus Macias, 62, was shot and killed on Monday of last week while traveling with his mother, wife, and child.
