The Minneapolis City Council has approved a deal between the city and the U.S. Department of Justice. The deal may bring expansive police reforms to the city.

About 4½ years after the police killing of George Floyd triggered state and federal investigations and sparked protests worldwide, Minneapolis officials have reached an agreement with the U.S. Department of Justice outlining sweeping reforms that will be made to address discriminatory policing.

The federal consent decree, which contains many of the same proposed mandates as the city’s agreement with the state, requires the city of Minneapolis to consider policing alternatives meant to reduce racial disparities.
