After China’s DeepSeek set the AI world alight with lightweight models that can provide pretty strong performance on relatively low-cost equipment like phones, Google wants developers to know it’s still in the game.

Gemma 3 is available in four sizes — 1B, 4B, 12B, and 27B parameters—allowing users to choose a model that fits their hardware and performance needs. According to Google, Gemma 3 outperforms competing models, including Meta’s Llama-405B, DeepSeek-V3, and OpenAI’s o3-mini, on the LMArena leaderboard, particularly in single-accelerator performance.

Google claims that Gemma 3 is the "world's best single-accelerator model," outperforming competitors such as Facebook's Llama and OpenAI when running on a host with a single GPU.

Gemma 3 shares tech with Gemini 2.0, supports 35 languages, and offers models with up to 27B parameters. It can be trained through Vertex AI and Google Colab, and it includes a safety image checker called ShieldGemma 2.
