A person died after driving off Highway 4 east of Willow Pass Road in Concord on Monday afternoon, the California Highway Patrol said. The crash was first reported at around 12:30 p.m., after the vehicle flew off the highway westbound and pummeled onto a former Navy installation now used by the U.S. Army, known as Military Ocean Terminal Concord.

Curtis Avery, 69, of Loudon, was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital after the crash, which involved a vintage van and a delivery van in a rear-end collision.
