Opposition leader Lee Jae-myung was sworn in as South Korea’s next president on Wednesday following a dramatic snap election six months after the country’s previous leader declared martial law and plunged the nation into chaos.

South Korea's conservatives have staged unlikely comebacks before. Yoon is the second conservative president in a row to be removed from office, after Park Geun-hye was impeached and jailed in a corruption scandal in 2017.

Lee Jae-myung, the candidate for the opposition Democratic Party, is poised to become South Korea’s next president after provisional results of a snap election showed him on course for a comfortable win.
