Pope Francis, who suffered two respiratory crises on Monday as he battles double pneumonia, has stabilised and no longer needs to use mechanical ventilation for help breathing, the Vatican said on Tuesday.

The Holy Father was admitted to Rome’s Gemelli Hospital on Feb. 14 and has since been treated for respiratory infections, double pneumonia, and mild kidney insufficiency.

After Pope Francis experienced one of his worst days since entering the hospital, hundreds of faithful from around the world continue to gather nightly in Vatican City to pray for his recovery.
